I have been drinking coffee and chicory for 70years, at the least, and French market is the BEST! It comes in a can that is vacuum sealed, so it is fresh, and I use a Toddy cold brew system so I can brew the whole can at one time. Never gets heated until I am ready for a cup!! Just the BEST!!Coffee and Chicory is awesome. But slightly more expensive than alternatives.I've been a fan of chicory coffee for decades but it was only recently that I started buying the stuff for use at home. I've tried all the brands that are readily available, but French Market City Roast comes the closest to the flavor of that delicious "black liquid gold" that I remember from my days in New Orleans. Unlike Community New Orleans Blend, which is rather bland and wimpy by comparison; or Café De Monde, which can be downright harsh and bitter; this coffee is much more refined. Even though you can use only about half the amount that is required to brew most conventional coffee, if you really like rich, strong coffee it's practically impossible to make a pot of this stuff too strong; it just gets richer, but without any bitterness. If you're looking for the genuine article, this is the one.Update 08/20/2014I still love this coffee, but the way the manufacturers keep raising the price of it is disgusting. The price has risen precipitously (more than 60%) in just the last few months, and now they've also started reducing the quantity of coffee in the cans from 16 to 12 ounces, which they still sell AT THE SAME INFLATED PRICE! I don't mind paying considerably more for a better product, but this is ridiculous. There seems to be no limit to the greed of the people peddling this product (present company, Amazon.com, excluded). I'm just about to give up on this coffee on principle alone, and only buy local and honest for a change.Update 09/30/2014Since my last update I've discovered that the ripoff mentioned above is more pervasive than I realized, and it's certainly not peculiar to the French Market brand. It seems that practically ALL coffee is now sold in lesser amounts at the same or higher price; 12 oz. units of coffee have replaced the previous 16 oz. units almost everywhere. This is great coffee, so since it's no more expensive than any other premium coffee I'll be sticking with it.By the way, the best deal is to buy it online directly from Reilly Foods. And if you buy 6 bags or more you'll get a nice discount, so even with the shipping charge included it's still a much better deal.I first tasted French Market Coffee & Chicory about 23 years ago when my husband first took me to New Orleans me to meet one of his sisters. It's absolutely the best coffee. BOLD IN-YOUR-FACE, WOW taste! It comes in regular which is bold, restaurant blend (which is medium dark roast) that is bolder and this dark roast which is the boldest of all. This is the kind you want if you've spent one too many hours in the French Quarter during Mardi Gras. This coffee is very smooth for such a bold, distinctive taste. Since it is such a rich coffee, you only need to use about 1/3 to 1/2 as much as regular coffee (this tip used to be displayed on each plastic lid, but not any longer). That makes it an excellent value, as well, since a 12 ounce can will last much longer than a regular 12 ounce can of coffee.I used to get this as a Subscribe and Save item but Amazon discontinued it for a good while so I asked my local grocery store (in Missouri) to get it. They did and while it was pricey, it was still a good buy (it came in 16 ounce cans for a long time after other coffees had down-sized). Now that I've relocated to the South, I can get it pretty much anywhere. I still look for it on sale and can sometimes get it for $3.99 a can. That's when I stock up. Unfortunately, I don't think the price here on Amazon is any kind of bargain, even with Prime, $10+ a can is far too expensive. The coffee is superb but it can be found on line at a much lower $6.25 a can (plus shipping) but even adding in shipping, I still think it comes to less than the price here.If you want robust and tasteful coffee, this is it. I've been drinking this brand for at least 50 years. The WAFFLE HOUSE brand coffee pales compared to the French Market Dark Roast. Don't let the Dark Roast fool you because it is very rich and satisfying if you use the correct measure. For instance, I use for my morning drink of 2 cups....1 cup and a half water, then 1 heaping spoon of Carnation Evaporated Milk from the can or powdered Carnation Milk(I prefer either one) Experiment a little with your measurements a little until the right amount rings in and, Presto! Too much cream or milk overpowers the distinctive flavor of French Market Dark Roast. Of course by measurement I mean as for container for the coffee I use the WAFFLE HOUSE coffee MUG I bought because of the great feel and grip that set the mood. Here in Atlanta there aren't any "DARK ROAST", brand, just "MEDIUM ROAST" only at the "PUBLIX" SUPERMARKET chain of stores whose management won't stock after several inquires. Not even WALMART carries French Market Coffee except in New Orleans. I used to order three 12 ounce cans for about $21.00 but now its been jacked up to $33.00 plus almost $10.00 in shipping. So since I have several relatives that live in New Orleans they keep me stocked. It is best to drink this coffee until boiling hot and allow cooling for about 2 minutes not allowing the cream or milk to rise to the brim else you'll lose that "hit". But most of all the flavor where you'll drink the whole cup in approx 2-3 minutes, it's that good when you master the technique. Drinking it warm just messes up everything and taste like a kiddie drink. You can say its the "Courvosier or ROLLS ROYSE" of Coffees".
